Singer, songwriter and performer Anna Davel, obtained her Diploma in Light Music / Jazz at the Tshwane University of Technology in 1998. In 1997 she became the overall winner of the annual ATKV Crescendo competition. Her winning song firmly put her on the map as a songwriter and performer.

Later that same year, she joined the popular female A Capella group, Cutt Glas, and remained a member until the end of 2003.  Cutt Glas toured throughout South Africa and performed abroad in countries such as the UK, Portugal, Finland, China and Belgium. During her time with the group, they released three CD's.

She then decided to go solo in 2003 and exciting things have been happening ever since! In 2006 her album was awarded the prestigious SAMA for Best Adult contemporary album - Afrikaans. In 2008 she was nominated along with only 5 top SA ladies as Best Female Vocalist during the prestige VMT music Awards ceremony at Emperor’s Palace. 

2010 PROJECTS

This is also the year in which South Africa revives itself as country that produces local movies, in which Anna stars in two of the most awaited feature films. Liefling - die Movie (the first Afrikaans musical movie en decades). She will be co-starring and singing a duet with Kurt Darren, the leading-selling male singer in the Afrikaans market. The second role is as Amanda in Franz Marx’s new movie release ‘Die verhaal van Susannah van Biljon, with a phenominal cast a.o. Sharleen Surtie-Ricards, Karen Zoid, Wilna Snyman and David Reese.
The Afri-Frans production captured the hearts of South Africans and a live show was lauched in April 2010. This production played to sold-out houses throughout South Africa and is based on the Platinum record with the same title. Anna shared the stage with artists like Laurika Rauch, Anna-Mart van der Merwe, Mathys Roets and the phenominal French Songstress MyraMaud. The show will continue to tour throughout 2010 and 2011.

2009 ALBUM RELEASE

‘Linger Longer’  released in May 2009 and nominated for a SAMA award for Best traditional Jazz Album 2010 along with world renown singers such as Tutu Puoano: a Swing album (her 6thCD) featuring the evergreen jazz favourites of timeless artists such as Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin and many more. This album received very positive reviews from leading print media (Rapport, Die Beeld, Sarie, Rooi Rose, Pretoria News, Die Burger) and it showcases the music of the big band era in a way that is so suited to Anna’s smoky jazzy style and also includes some steamy latino rhythms, swinging bossa novas and some moving ballades. Anna regularly performs Jazz standards at corporate functions alongside top SA musicians (Timothy Moloi, Denny Lalouette, Brendan Ross, Mauritz Lotz, David Klassen, Matthys Maree) and her easy and soothing vocal style has resulted in this repertoire constantly being adapted to suit various stylish.

2007 ALBUM RELEASE

Raaisels, skepe en 1000 drome’ (2007) Anna’s 5th album once again released independently with 13 Brand new original songs composed and sung by Anna. A countrywide tour ensure that fans all over the country could hear this production live at all major festivals and intimate theatres. Positive reviews highlighted Anna’s heartfelt and honest compositions and the textured musical production of this album.

2006 ALBUMS

Anna's contined contribution to the South African music industry was rewarded when her 3rd album Godinne op die Grondpad won the prestigious SAMA award in 2006 as winner of Best Adult Contemporary Album: Afrikaans. It is the most highly acclaimed Music Award in SA music and quite an achievement as the album was released independently and all music and lyrics were written by Anna. She once again, as with her previous 2 solo albums, was the executive producer of this project.

PRODUCTIONS

Anna has produced ten stage productions for arts festivals and theatres since 1997.

• She was invited to perform in Canada during the 2006 annual South African Festival in Canmore, Alberta along with Thandi Klassen and Karen Zoid.

March 2007 Anna was invited to perform in London together with producer Matthys Maree.

She produced and performed in the production “Ashes”, a Latin American one-woman cabaret with the script written by Nataniël and directed by Sandra Prinsloo. This production played to audiences at the KKNK festival, Innibos Festival in Nelspruit as well as in Bloemfontein and Gauteng.

One of her most popular production Boheem! together with the all-female string group Zamar performed to standing ovations. Written and directed by Jaci de Villiers they played a selection of exotic European songs at The Wordiest in Stellenbosch, Cultivaria Festival in Paarl, Aardklop Festival in North-West, Innibos festival in Nelspruit and the magical Paul Cluver Amphi-theatre.

She performed with Gloria Bosman, Zwai Bala and Chris Chameleon as guest artist at the 1000th episode Ball of 7deLaan – SABC2’s top soapier This performance was broadcast in prime time on a Saturday night at 20:00 in a one and a half hour viewing extravaganza. (1.6 million viewers)

One of the tracks, Teen die einde van die Aand, shot up to number 4 on OFM’s Global Charts, exceptional for a local artist.

Recently Anna made her acting debut and created havoc in Egoli playing the wild and voluptuous Anke.

She is currently performing in Dagboek van ‘n swerwer opening at the Innibos festival ‘07, directed by Jaci de Villiers. This production was nominated for best Music theatre production 2008 at the KKNK.

•  Productions created by Anna for various theatres and festivals includes Moegewroeg, Te Diep, Slaapdans, Pers, Die Kleur van Klank, Gypsy, Ashes, Godinne op die Grondpad and Linger, Boulevard of Dreams, Boheem!, Raaisels, Bon Appetit!, Skepe & 1000 Drome and Linger Longer.

•  Anna was the musical director of “Ma’Divine”, a production in which she also performed alongside Elzabe Zietsman, Sarah Theron, Trix Pienaar and Natalia da Rocha.

She received a FNB Vita Award 2002 for Best Performance by a new actress for her role in Skadu's teen die Muur.  This production toured in Belgium during the South African Culture week.

In 2004 she collaborated with producer Alexa Strachan to write music for View on the Highway, a music theatre production as well as the blockbuster comedy Haar, Hare which played to full houses at the Aardklop National Arts Festival ‘06.

She was one of the guest artist of Al daai Jazz - a production that premiered at the KKNK in 2002 and featured artists such as Gloria Bosman, Lize Beekman, Karen Zoid, Amanda Strydom and Mynie Grové.

She composed the theme music for the popular television makeover series, Face 2 Face, which was screened on SABC 2 during 2004. It was sung by the phenomenal Jennifer Jones.

She performed in front of 3000 people in the Big Top Arena in Nagkantoor, together with Charlene Truter (Pasella), Mathys Roets, Jannie du Toit and others.

Anna is currently performing in 3 self-produced solo shows – Boulevard of Dreams (a French production), Bon Appétit (A decadent Foodie cabaret) and Linger Longer (The Stage production of her latest CD).

Television appearances include Egoli, Top Billing, Live with Nataniël, Pasella, Draadloos, Geraas, Gons, 7de Laan, Stoom, Hoenner, Dis hoe dit is met Steve, Kwêla, Fiesta, Jou show met Emo, Jukebox, Noot vir Noot and DKNT.

PREVIOUS ALBUMS

Her first solo album Te Diep was released in 2000. The daily newspaper Beeld, referred to it as one of the top local music releases of the year.
